The Nigerian music industry enjoyed a lot of success in 2018. A couple of good songs were released by many Nigerian acts. Afrobeats as a genre gained more global recognition and the players in the game like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and many others pushed their respective sound beyond barriers. As these top acts continue to build their brands and extend the reach of their music, new acts in the game also strove to break into the mainstream. Artists like Teni, Peruzzi, Prettyboy DO, Odunsi shook the music scene and received a warm welcome from many music lovers and have built for themselves a solid and loyal fanbase. Notjustok had earlier compiled a list of artists to watch out for earlier in 2018 and the compilation nearly had absolute accuracy.
As Teni, Peruzzi, and likes slowly break into the pop scene, emerging artists are also struggling to make a name for themselves in this oversaturated music industry. We saw upcoming acts in 2018 drop laudable projects.
Below is a list of rising acts that are expected to blow up in 2019. This is an expertly curated list of Nigerian new artists who have made a mark so far.
Fireboy DML
Fireboy DML is a talent to behold. The young singer is currently signed to Olamide’s YBNL record label. He is an Afro-life artist that infuses R&B and Soul with Afropop. He was formerly a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Fireboy has always loved music from his childhood. Before he was discovered by Olamide, the singer had been releasing music to an organic fanbase which he had been building. After he was signed to the label, he collaborated with Oxlade to release a magical song Sing. His hit single Jealous gained a lot of attention and acceptance from music lovers. His contribution to the YBNL Mafia album was not unnoticed as well. From production to songwriting to composition, Fireboy DML is the complete package.
It is clear that the singer has a promising career ahead of him and is one of the acts to watch out for in 2019.
Many people have presumed that Hip-Hop in Nigeria is dying. Although custodians like MI are doing everything within their capability to keep it alive, the state of the genre has been constantly questioned by fans. Blaqbonez, whose original name is Akumefule Chukwu-Emeka George, has been disturbing the Hip-Hop scene as an underground act for years. He rose to prominence when he won Terry Tha Rapman Zombie Competition.
The rapper was signed on to Chocolate City in 2018 after getting an endorsement from MI. His rap project Bad Boy Blaq was described as one of the best bodies of work that was released from a Nigerian rapper in 2018. He got a lot of recognition from music lovers and has been tipped to be one of the acts to represent Nigeria when it comes to rap.
Blaqbonez definitely has what it takes to take his career to the next level and reinforce his place as a Hip-Hop star.
When you hear Oxlade’s voice on a song, there is a high possibility that you would experience what paradise is like. His vocals are immaculate and his melody is pure. He hails from Surulere and has always been passionate about making music.
Oxlade is an Afropop/Afrosoul artist. He made a name for himself with his major feature on Blaqbonez’ Mamiwota. The song enjoyed massive commercial success and topped numerous charts on the radio. He also collaborated with Fireboy DML on his hot track Sing. The song revealed to music lovers the singer’s vocal dexterity and his unique sound.
He has continued to push his music as an independent artist. There have been reports that Davido might sign him to his DMW label. He ended the year with his banging single Shugar which received a lot of airplay. There is absolutely no doubt that Oxlade is prepared to cause a madness in 2019.
Flash is an Afropop singer that was introduced to the Nigerian music industry by veteran music producer Sarz. He made a song with Sarz and DJ Tunez named Get Up and the song enjoyed maximum airplay for quite a long time.
After the success of Get Up, many social media users ceaselessly asked for new music from the upcoming star. He later released another Sarz-produced single Balenciego which further revealed to consumers of Nigerian music that Flash is a bundle of talent.
Many of his fans desire to see more of him and hear more music from him and Flash seems absolutely capable to exceed these expectations in 2019.
