Davido Reveals His Contract With Sony Is Still Active

Nigerian pop star, Davido has revealed that contrary to what most people think that he’s no longer with Sony, his contract with the international recording company, Sony Music Entertainment, is still very much active till date, all he did when he supposedly left them in 2017 was carve a path for himself to do music in Nigeria but not by leaving them totally.

This information was made public during his recent interview with Abass on “For The Record With DJ Abass” while he was in London for the promotion oh his upcoming concert in O2. The pop singer when asked about his song, Fall doing well at the moment in the united state, he also expressed his surprise and that led to the Sony story. According to Davido, it’s funny how artistes search for international deals yet what will give them that international break might just be another local song.

In this interview, the singer revealed that he had to stand his ground with Sony in 2017 after being frustrated all through 2016 with them trying to make him try different sounds that were not just working. He said;

Even in 2016, I was like, yo why did I sign this contract. I signed it in 2016 and all through 2016, we were just playing around, nobody knew what they were doing and yes, I was frustrated and I was thinking “I would’ve just stayed in my Nigeria jeje and I was okay o”

so after trying different things that were not working, Davido revealed he made the decision to move back home.

“So I was like, you know what? I’m going back home. I don’t care what you guys think, I’m going back home and I told everybody I took from Nigeria to Yankee that whoever stays here and does not move back with me, you’re on your own o… Some people stayed back and now they’re somewhere lost”

While the dream of every artiste is to get that global recognition, Davido also revealed in this interview that he wasn’t crazy about global recognition as at when he signed the Sony deal and also right now, and that is because, according to the artiste, he understands the power of being an African artistes with Africans always supporting each other. He said;

Being an African artiste, because of how Africans support their people no matter where in the world, you can actually do a show anywhere in the world.

It is this philosophy that the singer left the United State for Nigeria with and it is a belief Davido still carries because while he knows he can have his shows in almost all parts of the world at the moment, he also stated that any Nigerian or African artiste, despite their level of influence can also pull their weight, no matter how big or small.

Concerning his deal, yes, Davido according to this interview, is still with Sony but because he now has some level of influence which he referred to as “small mouth”, because he now has this “small mouth”, he’s trying to renegotiate the deal. But yes, he’s still with Sony Music Entertainment while being the boss of Davido Music Worldwide, DMW.
