Gernot Rohr, the prolific German tactician, has been sacked as Super Eagles coach, and ex-player and coach Augustine Eguavoen has been named interim coach.
The Nigerian Football Federation made the announcement on Sunday, December 12th, 2021, that they had decided to axe the German coach, after several specualtions had initially gone round about his sacking.
Rohr, who has been in charge of the Nigerian football team for five years, helped the three-time African champions qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations, but that seemed not to be enough for the NFF.

With less than a month to go to the commencement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations where the Super Eagles will face Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau, Rohr has been sacked and replaced with a familiar face, Augustine Eguaveon, who takes over as an interim coach.
Eguavoen will now lead Nigeria to the 2021 AFCON hosted by Cameroun and he will be assisted by Salisu Yusuf (chief coach), Paul Aigbogun (assistant coach), Joseph Yobo (assistant coach); Terry Eguaoje (assistant coach) and Aloysius Agu (goalkeeper trainer). Former Nigeria captains Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal will provide technical and ambassadorial support for the crew.
The axed Rohr currently has a record of 28 wins out of 54 matches with Nigeria, and he is the most capped coach in the national team's history.
Eguavoen, an ex-player, was the team captain when the Super Eagles lifted the Africa Cup for the first time in Tunisia 27 years ago. He also coached the Super Eagles at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they clinched a bronze medal.
